Protecting Your Children’s Dental Health for a Lifetime

Children's Dental Health Month

It is estimated that more than 40 percent of children are affected by tooth decay in at least one primary tooth. Approximately 66 percent of teens suffer the same affliction in at least one permanent tooth. These numbers are staggering, considering that over the last decade the incidence of tooth decay has seen a decline among the total population. Experts believe that early education in proper dental care habits is crucial to reversing this trend and optimizing outcomes for lifelong dental health. The American Dental Association (ADA) and your family dentistry experts can help you understand the best ways to protect your children’s dental health.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

National Children’s Dental Health Month is the ADA’s program to promote awareness of proper dental care habits for children. It began in 1941, uniting dental care professionals with their communities to fight poor dental health nationwide. Today, the program strives to provide the tools necessary to teach young children about proper dental health all year long.

“Give Kids a Smile Day” is one of the most influential events of National Children’s Dental Health Month. It began as a one-day event in Ohio and has since expanded into a nationwide, year-round event. Give Kids a Smile enables dental care professionals all over the country to offer dental care screenings, essential treatments, and enhanced education about dental health to underprivileged kids in their communities. These programs provide dental care to more than 450,000 children who would not otherwise receive it.

Teaching Children Dental Health Habits

Children’s dental health begins at home with the emergence of their first tooth. Make your children a part of the dental care experience from the beginning by letting them choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste.

Teach your children these basic dental care habits:

  • Brush for two minutes, at least twice a day, brushing all areas of the mouth.
  • Floss once every day. Once your child has two side-by-side teeth, you can teach them how to floss.
  • Choose a toothbrush and toothpaste made for children. Ask your family dentistry professionals to recommend the best brands for kids.
  • Eat a teeth-healthy diet. While too much sugar can lead to tooth decay, fruits and vegetables can help fight cavities.

To ensure that your children are comfortable with visits to your family dentistry professionals, begin routine dental care appointments at an early age.
